The bloodiest battle in Singapore was fought here during World War II. In memory of the Japanese soldiers who died in the course of duty, a Japanese Syonan Shrine and a forty-foot tall memorial was built, while another memorial 10-foot high in the form of a crucifix was erected nearby for the British soldiers. After the Japanese Occupation, both the Japanese Memorial and the shrine were demolished by the British. The British Memorial, commemorative signboards and a flight of 135 concrete steps that once led to the Japanese Memorial remain as a reminder of the tragedy that once occurred here.
