Approaching from the south, along the footpath from Craster, you get the best view of the ruins of this 14th century castle, built by Thomas Earl of Lancaster, which sit on top of a craggy mound that juts dramatically into the North Sea. The large gatehouse, which doubled as a keep, is the most obvious structure. Crumbling towers and walls have become home to wild birds, wild flowers, and wildlife. If you are fond of seafood, the fishing village of Craster is famed for its kippers (smoked herring).
