It looks like a classic medieval castle, but this was originally a Tudor fort which the architect Edwin Lutyens converted to a private residence in 1903. The magnificent island setting provides a landmark that is an unmistakable sight from the mainland. A treat for garden lovers is the walled garden, designed by Gertrude Jekyll. It is visible from the Castle, but you can only get in when the gardener is there, so you will need to be lucky. Holy Island is reached by a causeway which is completely covered at high tide and which cannot be used for 2 hours before high tide or 3.5 hours afterwards. Tide tables are displayed at the causeway, but it pays to check in advance.
