The remains of this monument (only the base of the pillars stand today) are found close to the Puente de Alcántara and below the Infantry Academy on opposite banks of the river. There are four pillars, two on either side, that served as buttresses for the monumental arches that transported water from the Alcantarilla dam in the village of Mazarambroz over the gorge and into Toledo. This incredible example of Roman engineering was of such high quality that it was in use for almost 1000 years, well into the 9th century AD.
