Pozo Amargo hill, found in the Old Jewish Quarter and leading down to the Cathedral, owes its name to a bittersweet Toledan legend. The story tells of a beautiful young Jewish girl, locked away by her rich father, who fell in love with a young Castillian man. After various secret meetings between the two on this hill, destiny would have it that another Jewish man would find out about their love. He then told the girl's father, who, in a fit of rage, hid behind the well that served as a mute witness to the couple's love; the father killed the young Christian, and the beautiful girl cried and cried over the death of her lover into this well. After this tragic event, the water drawn from the well was no longer sweet, but bitter, and hence the name in Spanish, Bitter Well.
