The Arab village of Abu Gosh lies some eight miles outside of the city and is a popular spot at weekends, who come to enjoy the Arabic food. There are tea houses with Arabic sweets where customers can smoke a nargilla (a water pipe with flavored tobacco), as well as good Arab restaurants serving falafel, fowl, hummous and other traditional dishes, plus bakeries selling baklava and knaffeh (a sweet made from cheese and orange noodles) to take away. During King David's time the Ark of the Covenant stayed here for 20 years, supposedly at the spot where the Notre Dame de l'Arche stands. There is a wonderfully preserved Crusader Monastery and Church next to the village mosque, which belongs to the Lazarist fathers and has a small spring in its cellars.
