The town is worth visiting for its historic buildings, its links with the painter El Greco, the local crafts and the confectionery. This is the birthplace of the man who was the subject of El Greco’s most famous painting, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, which you’ll find in the annexe of the Santo Tomé church in Toledo. His name was Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo. The centre of town is a maze of cobbled streets joining the whitewashed houses around an attractive central square that features pillars and balconies. The square houses the 18th century Churrigueresque church of Santo Tomás where you’ll see El Greco’s Expolio. The Count of Orgaz’s 12th century castle is worth looking at as well. The locally produced crafts using cane and esparto grass are excellent. So are the sweets made out of marzipan, both are a legacy of the Moors.
