This town is worth visiting for its interesting historic buildings, its tasty local food and its links with one of Spain’s most famous writers. It lies just 30km from Toledo and it’s the birthplace of Fernando de Rojas, author of the play La Celestina, the best known piece of Spanish literature after Cervantes’s Don Quijote. It’s a typically solid Castilian town with an attractive main square with pillars and balconies. Here you’ll find the Duke of Osuna’s 15th century palace with its plateresque facade and the Ntra Sra. de la Paz church that’s a mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Take a look at the 15th century San Miguel Tower in mudéjar style, the Ntra. Sra. de la Soledad church in Baroque style, and the 16th century La Caridad hospital and chapel. There’s also an enormous Knights Templar castle. Try the local manchego cheese and the game dishes from the menu. The public bus from Toledo leaves from the Avenida Castilla-La Mancha.
