The historic buildings, the religious imagery in the church and the convent and the local wickerwork goods make this town worth a visit. Come on Sunday during mass (noon-1p) or ask the sacristan to let you in to the imposing 17th century church of Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción to see the magnificent 17m-high Churrigueresque altarpiece with its paintings by Claudio Coello. You’ll find the 18th century Baroque Augustinian convent alongside the church and it’s worth entering to see its collection of religious imagery that includes the statue of Cristo de las Misericordias. There are some impressive old mansions located around the main square. There’s still a thriving wickerwork industry here and the local festival is celebrated on September 13-15. The town is on the western fringe of Toledo province, just 8km from Oropesa. The public bus from Toledo leaves from the Avenida Castilla-La Mancha. For times, tel. +34 925 215 854.
