Named after the rugged Bugis traders who came to Singapore from Sulawesi in Indonesia, Bugis Village is a tame manifestation of the infamous old Bugis Street. Once crawling with transvestites, prostitutes and rowdy sailors, it is thronged today with street stalls selling imitation designer goods, clothing, souvenirs, fruits, and food centers serving local fare and delicacies. During the night, however, there is still a lot of merrymaking to be done here in beer gardens, pubs, bars, discos and a Broadway-style cabaret.
