The Farne Islands lie off the Northumberland coast, around 40 miles north of Newcastle. You can only visit Inner Farne and Staple Island, both of which are in the care of the National Trust. The islands are breeding grounds for many species of seabird - including four types of tern, eider ducks and puffins. Grey seals also colonise the Farnes. Visitors can also see a chapel built on Inner Farne as a memorial to St Cuthbert who died there in 687 AD. To get to the Islands, you need to get a boat from Seahouses. The boatmen will charge a fee for their services. Boats cannot land in bad weather.
