Away from the hustle and bustle of urban Singapore lies Changi Village, a quiet settlement serving as a departure point for Pulau Ubin and Johor in Malaysia. A footbridge from the jetty leads you to Changi Beach, once the execution site of thousands of civilians by Japanese soldiers during World War II. With its view of the offshore islands, it is frequented by bathers and fishermen. In the waters are kelongs (elevated fish traps) and boats, from bumboats to cargo ships. There is a smattering of restaurants and cafes here, with inexpensive local delicacies congregating at the Changi Food Centre.
