Gripsholm Palace is beautifully situated by the water on the outskirts of Mariefred. It can be accessed by boat from Stadshuskajen. It boasts of a truly unusual history. It was built by Gustav Vasa in the 1530s. Johan III was imprisoned here by his half-brother Erik XIV, and vice versa. Gustav IV was imprisioned here while his adversaries did their utmost to drive him insane. Sweden's so-called Theatre King, Gustav III, constructed a palace theatre at Gripsholm, with a unique third balcony from where the servants could view the performances without being seen by the nobler members of the audience. Gustav III also laid the foundations for what was to become the State Portrait Collection, with over 4000 portraits dating from the sixteenth century and later.
