Geneva has always been a cosmopolitan and tolerant city. In 1859 the Russian Orthodox population of the city was authorized to build a church. The project was financed thanks to the generosity of a long-term resident, the Duchess Anna Feodorovna Constancia, the sister-in-law of Tsar Alexander the 1st and aunt of Queen Victoria. The church was built in a Byzantine Moscovite style according to the design of Grimm, a professor at the St-Petersburg Academy, and was completed in 1866. The church has gleaming gilded domes (which were restored in 1966). Inside it is beautifully decorated and has an impressive collection of 16th-20th century icons.
