The monastery on Holy Island was originally founded by St Aidan in 635 AD. It became a place of Christian pilgrimage associated with St Cuthbert. The wealth of the monastery made it a target for Viking raids during the late 8th century, and the monks abandoned the site. A monastery was re-established in the 12th century, surviving until its dissolution by Henry VIII in 1537. The ruins are still a place of pilgrimage, but are visually impressive in their own right and appeal to a range of visitors. Holy Island is reached by a causeway which is submerged at high tide and is impassable for two hours before high tide or three and a half hours afterwards. Tide tables are displayed at the causeway, but it pays to check in advance.
