A Nordic gift for a couple of months only, Irreverent is a must-see exhibit at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. This international showcase features nine "cutting edge" artists from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Each piece deconstructs the conceived notions of Scandinavian modernism which transcend into a realm of their own. From art work made from natural materials, ceramic, glass, fiber, wood, and metal, this exhibition challenges the viewer to see through the artists' eyes. Ultimately, all the works reinvent the term craft art. From bizarre jewelry, shoes, and clothing to sculptures and fabric displays, the whole showcase has the viewer staring in wonderment. Most notably, the works by Anni Rapinoja are fundamental as her pieces are constructed out of pussy willows and leaves to encourage one to recognize one's place in nature. In addition, as the title of this exhibition implies a moving away from the traditional craft art, the artists spawn new creations that may bring us closer to nature, or deconstruct the way we see modernism. Lastly, at the opening night party, it was great to hear some of the artists speak about their work, their inspirations, and hear live jazz by Swedish Jazz musician Kjell Nordeson.
