The celebrated humanist Alfonso Reyes is remembered as much for his numerous written works as for being one of the founding member of the Colegio Nacional, a learning center that holds an important place in the world of Mexican education. The institute was actually established within an old convent school, founded by Ignacia Azlor de Echávez, in the early days of colonial occupation. Formally called the Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Religiosas de la Enseñanza (Our Lady of Pilar School of Religious Instructors,) an institution dedicated to the formation of the minds of young girls, it later became a school for the blind, and for a short time, the Palace of Justice. Today, the Colegio Nacional offers all sorts of interesting courses, conferences and exhibitions.
