Looking for signs of life in that gray, post-holiday period of mid-January? Look no further than the 14th annual Berlin & Beyond Film Festival, whose well-planned schedule of events will keep you busy for a full seven days. The festival, whose main venue is the venerable Castro Theatre, features films from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Each year, the festival organizers make sure to screen several short films, as well as an old favorite (this year it's the classic "Der Blaue Engel"), but the majority of films screened are feature-length new releases, most of which won't make it to American screens other than at small events such as this one. One notable event of this year's festival is the special tribute to German new wave director, Wim Wenders, who is out in support of his new film, "Palermo Shooting," starring Dennis Hopper. Wenders will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. On closing night, Til Schweiger's German mega-hit "Rabbit Without Ears" will screen. It is Germany's highest grossing film of all time.

Other films on the program include Switzerland's Academy Award entry for Best Foreign Film, "The Friend," and the Max Ophüls Prize Winner, "Come In And Burn Out." There will also be a special event entitled "Hollywood Speaks German," a lecture/presentation that turns a keen eye toward the early sound era with clips of Hollywood legends Buster Keaton, Joan Crawford, and Laurel & Hardy speaking German. These are some of the stand-out pieces, but check the website for a complete list of all the excellent films and events.
