Are short stories inferior to novels? Is a haiku any less of an artistic marvel than an epic poem? Do we judge the worth of a painting by the size of its canvas? Of course not. Why then do film shorts occupy a less-than-exalted place in the cinematic pantheon? One can only wonder. This festival seeks to right that wrong with a riotous mix of film genres (comedy, drama, experimental, animated, even documentary) that have only two things in common: they are all less than 13 minutes long and they are all as finely crafted as any feature-length flick out there. Plus it's a safe bet that no other festival out there has examined the breeding habits of chairs or the inner life of sock puppets.
