This event is not for the feeble-hearted. More than 30,000 participants purchase a ticket to the sizzling Black Rock Desert, one of the flattest surfaces on the planet, for a week of biking across its arid darkness. Bringing their own survival kit, the participants brave heat, dehydration and dust as they traverse from camp to camp. Understandably, tempers are short, and foul language and nudity are very much a part of the experience. On the sixth night, the effigy of a large wooden man is burnt, giving this high-intensity festival its name. The event is not open to spectators, but anyone over 18 years is welcome to participate. Check the Web site for details.
