One of the highlights of the Welsh musical calendar, the Welsh Proms is an annual event taking place in late July. On a smaller scale than the famous London Proms, the series nevertheless has much to offer. Evening concerts focus on popular works with themed nights such as the opera prom, choral prom and family prom. The last night happens in grand style with lots of traditional Welsh music, a premier or two and plenty of flag-waving and singing on the part of the audience. There are also a few lunchtime concerts, a Jazz prom and the St David's Hall Javanese gamelan receives an airing too. If you've never heard this unusual percussion instrument, it's well worth going along for the experience.
