As part of the Post Street Theatre's 2009 calendar, Burn the Floor, a heart-pounding dance extravaganza, will continue to run through March 15, 2009. The show features talented dancers—most of whom have individually won numerous accolades and competitions including the International Latin Championship, the World Ten Dance Championship and the U.S. Latin Championship, to name a few: from 14 different countries. Burn the Floor made its debut in 1999 in Bournemouth, United Kingdom and followed thereafter with performances in Australia, other parts of Europe, and then back to Great Britain. The show went on to make its American premiere in 2004 and is currently on its first run in the Bay area. The show begins with an introduction by Choreographer and Artistic Director Jason Gilkison (after a heart-pounding opening number that definitely puts the audience in the right frame of mind) who explains that ballroom dancing has come a long way and that these performances contain some serious pizzazz. The two hour-plus show features dances such as Swing, Salsa, Jive, Mambo, the Waltz, and many others. The chemistry between the partners is undeniable—they all exude sensuality and ferocity and consistently make seemingly perfect transitions into the various dance routines—they make it all look, well, just so good! The routines are complemented by beautiful, sparkly, coordinating costumes; in fact, the audience would never guess that the dancers are allotted only 90 seconds to make costume changes! The set is mesmerizing thanks to flashy lighting and, of course, a disco ball. The show also features the smooth drum beats of two percussionists as well as the talents of two high-octane vocalists whose performances all greatly complement the show. Explosive, rhythmic, sultry—the accolades that could describe this dance extravaganza are countless, and thanks to Burn the Floor, ballroom dancing has never looked so appealing! Tickets: USD39-USD69. Performance Dates: Now-March 15. -Emily Dupuis
