The San Francisco Diggers who took their names from the original English diggers, opened stores in the mid and late 1960s which gave away items like free food, medical care, transport and temporary housing. This group was founded by Emmett Grogan, Peter Coyote, Peter Berg and the other members of the San Francisco Mime Troupe. They also organized free music concerts and works of political art. Their shops offered items which were free for taking and giving, as these items were discarded but still in usable condition.
