MAVAO's façade takes the form of a glass pyramid mounted on top of a limestone base. The museum is located in the vast grounds of the Hipódromo La Rinconada and the Poliedro de Caracas conference center. MAVAO was opened on June 15, 1984 and is chiefly dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Venezuelan visual arts from the first half of the 20th century. Named after Alejandro Otero, one of contemporary Venezuela's most distinguished plastic artists, the museum boasts a significant collection of works and documents. The museum's promotional activities include guided tours, expression workshops, and local cultural events. Entrance is free.
