Racists-Staff Discriminate on Blacks
Prof Ngugi was ordered out of the Hotel Vitale in San Francisco, California, while on a tour to promote his latest book, apparently because he is black. Prof Ngugi wa Thiong'o The hotel claims to have suspended the offending staff member and has offered Ngugi a grovelling apology. Prof Ngugi is an African cultural icon and has written many acclaimed novels, among them A Grain of Wheat ,The River Between and Petals of Blood. He is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine, where he is the Director of the International Centre for Writing and Translation. Nice Hotel but won't be back
The hotel photos made the room look wonderful. I wanted to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday in a big way and chose this hotel based on the photos and the claim of a luxury hotel. When we drove up, I was disappointed by the outside appearance of the hotel. Very plain and small. The interior was just ok, noting special as I had hoped. The hotel staff was very friendly and accomodating though. The room itself was the most disappointing because at at total of $450+ dollars for a 1 night stay ($45.00 for valet parking and $40.00 for 6 birthday balloons included in the cost), I could have flown to Vegas. The room was small and nothing of the Wow I was hoping to give my husband for this special day. The upside was that large soaking tub (my husband is over 6 feet tall) and the fluffy bed and bedding. The view was nice at night time though. I guess you have to visit a place to see it for yourself. Needless to say, we won't be back.

a new favorite
we recently had the opportunity to stay here and found it to be on par with the w hotel but maybe even slightly better. the hotel staff was friendly and cool but not aloof. every time you passed them by in the hall, they would greet you with a smile and say hello. the decor had a very at-one-with-nature feel. there were pictures of water, leaves, flowers that lined the walls in the hallway and in the room. outside each room, next to the door, a small sheaf of lavender decorated a small box. the bathroom was stocked with fresh (brand) products scented of lemon and brown sugar. the bed was super-comfy with lofty pillows and comforters. there was a flat panel tv, a cd alarm clock, a cordless phone, and high-speed, wireless internet connection. the entire hotel offers wifi, even in the lounge area - which is so convenient when you want to get away from the room for a bit. don't miss the americano bar and restaurant near the lobby - the food is excellent. the ferry building is also across the street, the streetcars are right next to the hotel, and the ballpark is within walking distance. i highly recommend this hotel for it's service, amenities, and location.
