Before the fall of the Wall, most Berliners wouldn't have spared a thought for the district of Hellersdorf, deep in Eastern Berlin. However, the opening of the district's new shopping centre "Helle Mitte" has put Hellersdorf firmly on the map. A well-known college also recently relocated here from West Berlin, bringing the area even more into the public consciousness.
