Great Place to Stay When going to UCSF
I travel to the UCSF Medical Center every few months, and I always stay at the Carl. It's a funky old hotel, with great ambience. Though the rooms are small, they are clean and comfortable. Since I'm not the type of person who thinks that my hotel IS my destination, I'm happy with it. Call me wierd, but I view a hotel as a place to sleep, not spent the entire trip hanging out in. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The neighborhood is very nice, and its' an easy walk to the Medical Center. Yes, the train outside your window is noisy, but hey! At least it's also convenient. I have to be honest and admit that I did have trouble sleeping a bit, but seeing as how I live in a rural area, anything noiser than crickets chirping will keep me up at night. I will always stay there when going to the Med Center. The price can't be beat, and they also offer a discount if you are a UCSF patient there on hospital business. In my opinion it's a great place to stay.

Good Location, Price, NOISY
Carl Hotel was good value, but not for the light sleeper. Location near the Carl Valley was excellent - coffee shops, restaurants, stores and also close to the Haight-Ashbury. Rooms were small but clean. Service was excellent. If only the trolley didn't rattle the windows so often...

The Carl fit the bill
I needed a place close to UCSF, dining, groceries and needed it to be cheap. And clean which it was. I stayed 1 night on the second floor, and 3 nights on the ground floor (just me). The 2nd floor room was nicer with a private bath, and larger (still small), but $24 more. The ground floor rooom was tiny with a shared bath and a twin bed. But hey, at $55.- a night it was fine. And did have a small TV (with cable), mini fridge, microwave and hair dryer. Still, I would onlky reccomend this place to a budget traveler. Noisy but convienent with the Muni train right there on Carl street. And you need to be fit with no elevator (you have to go up then down stairs even on the ground floor).
