Falsely marketed, huge disappointment
The Tolley Cottage is very unwelcoming overall, and in specific, is falsely marketed using the appeal of the Avon-Kennet Camal which backs the property and is supposed to provide the setting for a relaxing patio breakfast outdoors, overlooking the canal each morning. Run by a stuffy couple who decide whether or not to serve breakfast on the patio, this cramped inn fails to achieve the most basic of services: to make guests feel welcome. We spent 2 lovely summer days eating inside, looking out over the lonely patio table. There is no community or shared area, and a door closes the home to tourists, who are relegated to their tiny (but spotlessly clean) rooms. We were told very sharply that we must stay in our rooms and not explore any part of the house. One of the hosts is a Master of Wine, says critic Alastair Sawday - but there is no afternoon glass of wine or any kind of offering on hand. (His expertise means nothing if not shared with guests). Rooms are very small, not suitable for a couple. Early breakfast prevents kanoodling with one's spouse/partner or sleeping in after a long day hoofing around Bath. It takes 20 minutes, not the reported 10, walking into town. It's a dark path at night coming home - not safe for single female travellers. Very limited appeal for a single traveller who rises early, needs little space, and can walk good distances in the dark.
