One of the last places you would expect to find such an exquisite establishment is on Karl-Marx-Straße, working-class Neukölln's shabby shopping street. Here, hidden away in a courtyard behind the main road, is a glorious hall decorated with golden stucco, marble statues and large, gilt-edged mirrors. Built in the 19th century, this former dance hall was rescued from demolition in the 1980s and transformed into a café.
