Officially established as a fish market by an Act of Parliament in 1698, Billingsgate is no longer situated in Billingsgate Wharf, but still retains its reputation as the place to come to sample the fruits of the sea. Just ask all the top chefs and restaurateurs who rise unnaturally early in order to come here and get their pick of fish. This is an amazingly atmospheric, traditional market, where the porters still wear uniforms and the whole place is a buzz with deals being struck and sales being made. Also, some tasty bargains can be found if you're buying in bulk.
