Taxis are the most comfortable method of transport in the city, as they avoid the pushing and squashing you get in buses and the metro. They do, however, have drawbacks; one of them being cost, which often means an unsafe journey.
There are various types of taxis in Mexico City. There are some at the airport, which are controlled and monitored, and are quite safe: they have fixed prices for various destinations. Another type are the tourist taxis, which can be found outside the hotels and charge a little more than average. The "taxis de sitio" (i.e taxis at ranks) come out of a fixed base, and are closely monitored. They can be reached at their bases or by phone. Finally, we find the "ecological" taxis, which are all green, and can be caught in the streets. They charge the lowest prices. Be careful when you get in one of these: check that it has an ID number on display and the counter is ticking away, as there have been some unpleasant incidents. The minimum tariff is $4.50. From here onwards, prices will go up depending on distances and fuel expenses.
