Because many Costa Ricans do not have cars, public transport is efficient and inexpensive, although it is not particularly fast. "Tracopa" buses to Heredia leave every ten minutes from 5am until 15 minutes past midnight, and then every half hour until four in the morning. The trip takes 25 minutes and can be hot bring some bottled water with you. You will see some great views on the way, so try to grab a window seat.
