Built in the 1930s, Gambir Station was renovated in the 1990s, giving it a modern facade. This green ceramic building comprises three floors. The rail track is on the third floor, and the second features the waiting lounge with several cafeteria and fast-food restaurants. The ticket counters and a public hall completed with fast foods, snack bars and some automatic teller machines are on the first floor. It specially serves routes to major destinations throughout Java except some trains to Surabaya. The commuter trains to and out of Jakarta do not stop by. The station lies just a walking distance to some historical sites and landmarks. Djawatan Angkutan Motor Republik Indonesia (DAMRI) reaches the station from the Soekarno-Hatta airport.
