Situated four kms west of the city centre, Salzburg Airport is known as the 'gateway to the Alps'. Opened in 1926, the airport is now the second busiest in Austria, catering to 1.2 million passengers a year. The two short-stay and five long-stay car parks are all located no more than five minutes' walk from the main terminal building. The airport is situated near the A1 motorway. Drivers heading for the airport should take the exit marked Flughafen. The bus number 2 to the city centre and central station departs every 10 minutes. The journey takes around 20 minutes and costs EUR 1,80. A taxi ride should take 10-15 minutes and cost in the region of EUR 12. The airport has just one terminal, meaning that the distances passengers have to cover on foot are minimal. Two restaurants, two bars and a snack bar provide a choice of hot and cold meals. The airport contains a duty free shop, jeweller's, souvenir shop, boutique, book shop, off-license, post office, bank and several car hire companies and travel agents.
