Aside from the airport, the only way to arrive or depart Cozumel is by boat. The main ferry dock is located in the heart of downtown San Miguel, near the center square. The main ferry route is between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen on the mainland. Boats depart and arrive regularly every hour on the hour but check the schedule as it is subject to change without notice. Tickets can be purchased at the booth on the street or on the boat from attendants. Prior to departure, passengers queue up in either a waiting room or a specially designated area. Always check with the attendant that you are in the correct line. In high season the wait is longer as there are more people. The ferry ride takes between 25 to 45 minutes depending on the weather, and the crossing can get quite rough at times. During high winds and foul weather the ferries are usually cancelled. A car ferry leaves from the other side of the island twice a day for the village of Puerto Morelos on the mainland. This is a four to five hour journey.
