Paris's metro system, which celebrated its 100th birthday in 2001, runs on 14 lines, logically numbered from 1 to 14. It also includes 4 RER lines (which stands for 'Reseau Express Regional' or Express Regional Network); these accommodate bigger trains - some are double-decked - that can lead you far out into the regions surrounding Paris. RER lines are named after letters: A-D. Tickets can only be purchased at the stations and should be kept until the end of your journey in case of a routine check.
