Beginning operations in 1979, MTR Corporation now operates four rail lines, all but one of which pass through or terminate at Central Station. Together, the lines comprise 82.4 kilometres of track running through 43 stations. The Airport Express provides 23-minute rapid service between Central in Hong Kong and the international airport at Chek Lap Kok on Lantau Island. The other lines run both below and above ground, across Hong Kong Island, under Victoria Harbour and through Kowloon into the New Territories, making travel here easy and inexpensive. Central Station connects to underground shopping malls, office building and all of the amenities of downtown Hong Kong. Single journey tickets are issued from machines, valid one time only on the day of issue for a specific journey. Stored-value Octopus cards are also available for multiple journeys, including a very economical three-day tourist pass.
