The United States dollar is accepted all over the world, and when you travel to Nicaragua you should bring dollars in cash or travellers cheques to avoid problems. Costa Rican banks usually charge 1%, and bureaux de change slightly more. It is important to remember that some of the expensive hotels charge in dollars, so it is a good idea to have some bills of both currencies with you at all times, and preferably also a credit card.
