The United States dollar is generally recognized as the international currency, and you should bring dollars in cash or travellers cheques to avoid problems during your stay in Central America. Costa Rican banks usually charge 1 percent. If you have travellers' cheques, you can ask for either dollars or colones. Some of the expensive hotels charge in dollars, so it is a good idea to have some bills of both currencies with you at all times to avoid any difficulties.
