The currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar, which breaks into 100 cents. Bank notes are available in the following denominations: A$5, A$10, A$20, A$50 and A$100. Coins are available in the following: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, A$1 and A$2. Since the Australian 1c and 2c coins are no longer in circulation, the amount to be paid will be rounded up or down to the nearest 5c. Most banks are open from 9:30a to 4p M-Th and from 9:30a-5p F. A few suburban branches are open from 9:30a-noon Sa. Changing your money in a bank will generally give you a better exchange rate than at a traditional Bureau de Change. The central branches of the major banks have foreign exchange facilities.

Visa, Mastercard, Bankcard, Diners Club and American Express are accepted in most shops, restaurants and hotels. Australian dollar traveller's cheques are usually accepted in large shops accompanied by your passport.

There are also numerous Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) dotted about the city providing 24 hour access to money.
