Most Mexican food in the city is served from little mom and pop taquerias or trucks that can be found all over in almost any neighborhood, each with their own rabid following of people devoted to quality food served at low prices. But, considering all the Mexican food that San Franciscans consume, Mexico DF serves authentic Mexican dishes that are as expensive as they are delicious. The ambiance is more casual, however, with a funky interior that wouldn't be out of place in a more hip taqueria in the Mission district. The open kitchen and large central communal table also encourage a more relaxed atmosphere, not to mention the large menu of excellent margaritas. Often crowded, Mexico DF is most popular as a spot to hit before going out to load up with friends on tequila, margaritas, and appetizers like the carnitas, which come in 1/2 or whole pound amounts.
