Emmy-Award winning choreographer/artistic director Yaelisa and the cast of talented dancers and musicians received a roar of applause for their performance, Canciónes. Set on the modern stage of the Novellus Theater at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for two nights only, Caminos Flamencos stars seven mesmerizing dancers, including soloists Fanny Ara and Melissa Cruz. The opening scene features the mixing of Flamenco and modern dance to the sounds of Iron and Wine. Then, the master, Yaelisa, takes the stage in a stunning, flowing dress, reinstating that this performance experiments with the tradition of Flamenco while adding a progressive twist. Yaelisa appears with her playful, dramatic eyes determined as each step is well calculated, and every clap and stomp are right in time with both the recorded and live music. The costumes beautifully accent the choreography, as each color adds to the mood that the soloists intend to express. After the intermission the theater gave the impression of a jazz club-Flamenco concert with the live ensemble that made it difficult to stop tapping your foot, urging you to stand up to clap and shout. Among the night's performers were Jason McGuire, "El Rubio," and John Calloway, two outstanding musicians. McGuire's fast finger plucking guitar licks teamed up against Yaelisa's fast foot work, while Calloway played the piano and flute simultaneously. In addition, singer, Felix de Lola's powerful vocals demonstrated the heart of Flamenco during the company's improv. Ultimately, Canciónes demonstrates the interconnectedness between age and youth, tradition and modern, while successfully expressing the art of Flamenco. Known as an art form that captures spiritual communication, Yaelisa demonstrates that the mixing of modern and tradition can yield new venues to interpret today's music and issues. Yaelisa and Caminos Flamencos swept up the audience with their talent and high energy that gave the Novellus Theater a jolt of life. Tickets:$15-$60. Performance Dates: November 1 & 2. -April Joseph
